I'm a person with photosensitive epilepsy, and I have used IT version 3 pro and now 5 without problems. One of the reasons I bought IT was because my memory/recall wasn't very good; there is no way I can remember abbreviations on my own. I have never used ST, so I can't compare the two products.

Perhaps start with one of the word lists that come with the product until you get a feel for it. Then start with creating your own word lists, but skip the phrases temporarily until you are adjusted to working with the program.

My typing speed without an expander is 85 wpm. An expander doesn't slow me down. An expander like IT can certainly save your hands, wrists, and shoulders, and I use it heavily more like a spell checker at times.

My suggestions:
Don't include very short words (you may have to manually delete them).
You can have too many words and phrases in a list. Make separate lists for specific uses.
It is extremely easy to use the add a word or phrase command (it's just two keystrokes), so add words as you go if you need
Keep everything neutral as far as colors go. Try to reduce contrasts because it seems to lessen eye fatigue and feeling like you're on a roller coaster.
Don't include words or phrases with numbers in them for now (you can do that later as you gain experience).
You can have IT open and linked to your document (and have a glossary open too) and just not use it right now. That will help you become familiar with what's going on.

Things I really like about IT:
The line count feature.
It doesn't crash like Auto Correct.
It's easy to learn and use.
It's fast.

I'm curious about Dragon. Why do you need a break from It?
