reformatting hard drive

I need to reformat my c drive. I have done one of my other computers and had no problems. But when I came to this computer, it gets to 51 percent and tells me insufficient memory. Any ideas how to fix this? I have also tried removing most of the programs. The reason I am reformatting is because it was telling me that i had run out of space on my C drive, which is absurd because it couldn't possiby be. I ran virus scan and had no viruses either. Something is terribly wrong with it.
