Here’s a very simple definition: This is system memory that is simulated by the hard drive. When all the RAM is being used (for example if there are many programs open at the same time) the computer will swap data to the hard drive and back to give the impression that there is slightly more memory. The first thing you want to do is run Disk Cleanup (Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools). After that, defrag your hard drive (Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools). This will ensure that when you set up the section of virtual memory it’s in a specific location and not all over the place. To change the virtual memory, do this: Start | Control Panel | System | Advanced (tab) | Settings (in the Performance section ) | Advanced (tab) | Change (in the Virtual Memory section). The minimum and maximum have to be the same size. Set it for the amount of memory your system has: 300 for 128 to 256 megs of RAM, 756 for 512 megs of RAM, 1134 for 768 megs of RAM, and 1536 for 1 gig of RAM. Click the “set” button and then click OK. Reboot, and you’re done.
