No sound on computer ??

Mine got fried last summer during storm and they rebuilt around my hard drive. My volume is not muted, and I tried to download stories from our local newspaper, - no sound. I don't know if they didn't hook something up, didn't put something in or if I am too stupid to know.

I usually don't care if all the little sounds come on when you turn computer on and off, but if I am going to take any of the transcription tests on line I assume I better have this working.

Should I break down and take this into a shop and ask them or is there something I am overlooking? Any help would be appreciated.
