Anybody out here use a KVM? (sm)

I currently have an old 1998 computer with lots of "hiccups" and saw a deal yesterday on HSN that I couldn't pass up. I bought a Gateway 552GE Intel P4 3.2 Ghz, 512 MB DDR, 200 GB HDD (this is mostly Greek to me). The hospitals I am assigned are still on WP 5.1 (ancient), but will be changing the format to I think DocQscribe in the future. For the time being I have to stick with working on the old computer but I would like to have access to the new computer as well. I've been told about the KVM and wondered if anyone out here uses it and could provide me with some input. Are their any quirks you've had to deal with? Can you keep both computers running at the same time and just flip a switch to go back and forth? I connect through cable (Road Runner) and don't know if that will be a problem or not either. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
