TRANSCRIPTIONIST LAB-PATHOLOGY Part Time Thurs, Fri, Sat / 8a-4:30p & 2p-6p Flexible Days High school diploma or GED Experience is required All the criteria-based duties and standards within this document will be performed according to established policies, procedures and guidelines within the department and the Hospital. JOB SUMMARY The Medical Transcriptionist is responsible to the Supervisor and/or Department Leader(s). He/she works in a self-directed work team committed to a common purpose and goals. The Medical Transcriptionist transcribes the following types of reports: surgical pathology, nuclear cardiology, and autopsy, as well as other general typing tasks, such as technical procedure, memos, etc. His/her functions also include report distribution, handling of "send out" specimens and slides, telephone requests for reports, pulling previous cases for review, etc. The Medical Transcriptionist contributes to positive outcomes and meeting the cultural expectations of the organization by exhibiting professional behavior and transcription expertise. He/she must identify opportunities for and contribute to the improvement of quality, safety and cost, as well as patient, customer, and employee satisfaction. May perform other duties as assigned. PRIMARY JOB DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1. Transcribes Surgical Pathology, Nuclear Cardiology and Autopsy reports. 2. Accessions tissue and FNA samples into the PowerPath computer system, corrects block counts, adds frozen sections and consults, and adjusts cases for proper CPT coding. 3. Provides other general typing tasks, such as Technical Procedures, Memos, Letter, etc. 4. Process slides and other materials to be sent to referral physicians for consultation and tracking appropriately. 5. Handles telephone requests for various reports, read reports to HIPAA approved individuals and faxes reports as indicated. 6. Responds to pathologist requests for previous cases, additional slides, etc. 7. Assists with tumor conference preparation. 8. Generates computer reports for daily workflow management. 9. Distributes reports to facilitate the function of the department. 10. C Maintains laboratory records and documentation as required by laboratory procedures and/or hospital record retention policies. 11. C Maintains patient comfort, confidentiality and privacy; adheres to HIPAA standards. 12. C Follows established safety and biohazard procedures and standard precautions at all times. Disposes of biohazardous wastes following laboratory protocols (see laboratory safety manual and chemical hygiene plan). CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1.
