Many of my MT friends dropped their AAMT membership and retired their CMT credential due to "issues" with AAMT, mainly offshore issues. They disbanded our old local chapter too, but the new we have now is astoundingly better! I thought about not renewing my certification, but I just couldn't do that. I suffered way too much anxiety while getting it, and then waiting several months to find out if I even passed the egg-sucking test, that I'm keeping it until and if I can ever retire. Now it's just an aggravating hassle to fulfill the renewal requirement every 3 years by getting 30 CE credits. That's a royal pain indeed. But I'm not ready to give it up.
