My husband's insurance was only $56 a WEEK, but had excellent Rx cover. My son has eczema and at 14 was finally referred to a specialist who wrote him out 4 different RX's to use according to severity. It cost us about $20 a month. We got the bill from the "specialist" for almost $400 to look at him for 5 minutes and hand out the prescriptions. The insurance paid all but $298 for the doc. HELLO? My husband changed jobs and got Anthem for a whopping $100 bucks a week and they don't cover 2 of the "preferred prescriptions" that my son needs, It would only be $10 each for the 2, but there are no generic forms for the meds, so I have to pay $40 apiece for 2 of the Rx's and $25 apiece for the "preferred" meds. Poor kid is now trying to survive on Benadryl and otc cortisone again. If that isn't bad enough, our new insurance is an HMO with a "$20 copay" Try as you may, your PCP will agree to send you to the ER for supposed "nonemergent matters" because they don't have any room to see you. I had obvious conjunctivitis and called my PCP and was told that I could get in a week from Friday. I called my insurance company and was assured that I only needed to pay my $20 copay as the doctor was not "available." I got the bill from my hospital for $385 for a 5 minute visit and the insurance only covered $200. The pompous PA told me to buy otc eyedrops and they didn't even WORK! I found an old bottle of amoxicillin in my cupboard that was still good and had to take that! The same PCP office kicked my 14 year old son and 10 year old daughter out of their practice because I couldn't pay the$150 left on their bills after insurance. I told them that I was in financial crisis and couldn't pay it right off. They sent me a "Certified Mail" letter telling me that my kids needed to find a new PCP and that, even if I did pay "the bill," they are never allowed to be seen back in their practice. We are still paying $100 bucks a week for insurance, but we don't even dare go to the doctor, yet the local MT work I do for hundreds and hundreds of patients every week have Medicaid (state assistance) and see the doc every week and get everything they want even if they are close to 400 lbs and are on 16 different meds for weight related diabetes, etc., and refuse to try and lose weight. At least I know where my tax dollars are going.
