Today I typed a report. The patient had established with Dr. X. Paid big bucks. Up front. Mucho money to have the complete physical so this Dr. X will know him real gud! Now the patient is in the ER with possibly bleeding ulcer. But Dr. X is off. Here comes Dr. Y....who is covering for Dr. X. But Dr. Y says he's going to have the ugh! RESIDENTS admit the patient. He's going home to dinner. Tomorrow (I guess if this patient lives that long) some Dr. Z who is a partner of Dr. X will drift in and do rounds. Ha! like Dr. Z will know anything! about this poor patient who has paid top dollar to establish....has been shuffled around the ER all night....had hands laid on him by the ER docs who did absolutely nothing ....then has a bunch of residents fly in with white coats flapping in the breeze and probably know more about Versace than bleeding ulcers at this point....only to have them write some generic orders....send him up stairs to struggle through the night (which he probably could have done on his own at home in the comfort and cleanliness of his own bed rather than being exposed to an unknown host of dread diseases during his 12+ hours in the ER in the hallway waiting for a room!....and then Dr. Z will "swing by" in the morning if this dude is still alive and "assess" his condition. Why do we have to establish with any stupid doctor now days. Let's skip the $500 up front cost to "have a doctor". HE'S NOT GOING TO BE THERE WHEN YOU NEED HIM ANYWAY. You never see them again after the initial visit. You probably will either see a nurse, physician assistant, or be held at bay by the 18 year old high school grad on the phone because "the doctor can't talk to you, you will have to leave a msg. Well if you have had it for a week, you are probably getting better. " drivel. It kills me that they put these teens on the phone who are actually practicing medicine - badly.
