First MT Job

Hi, I just started working as an MT and the company I'm with sent me a really small file one day and then nine days later finally sent me more work at 4 pm on Friday and it had to be turned in by 10 am on Saturday. When I spoke with them they asked what days I could work and I told them during the day and M - F. I've yet to get any work during the week. They pay very little, charged a fee to start working for them and I'm wondering if anyone else has started out this way and when you're new if the work is slow at first. Being single and having bills to pay makes it really scary and then I talk to others that work for them and they're swamped but say it was slow going at first. Is this the norm?
