Hi North Woods MT, My spouse is from near Marshfield Wisc, so am familiar with "the north woods" and wanted to say hi. Yes, those stretchy wrist gloves are helpful as is rubbing hands together, some trimnastics, or light aerobics to warm one's self. I'm in Michigan, also hypothyroid which doesn't help from November to April. Glad to make your acquaintance!
