Many community colleges have MT degress where you can earn your BA. They allow more depth to your learning as you get live help in front of your eyes, which is important when you are trying to absorb so much information. There are MANY online courses these days, but as stated, they are what you make of them and there is usually a lot more to learn afterward as they are limited to the course work and usually do not cover how things really relate as far as how to tell what goes where when not dictated, how to identify terms unknown to you by what is in the rest of the report, knowing when the doc jumps from an arm to a leg using the medical terminology, if a report is billable as dictated, etc...it is very complex and more than typing. For the most part, a lot of course references are just that, course references...you still need medical references. Stedman's and Dorlands are huge both reference wise and spellcheck wise, drug books, you need a mutifunctional wav player and some only provide free players or limited file type players which will severely limit your work capability. You also need to learn learn effective searching, which eliminates the need to find it on 5-10 sites...that is severely time consuming. There is an AAMT Book of Style, full of information and very useful as a basic guide and for grey areas so you can document WHYyou did what you did if not an issue previously covered under client preferences. However, client preference is always top priority, even when it goes against every bone in your body and every reference book you have....it is their dime so to speak. Questions are GOOD!! Just the fact that you DO NOT expect to start working and strike it rich is a good frame of mind. Keep that!! Having been "prowling" for 3 weeks (by the way, you have an interest or possible interest, so that is not prowling but infoseeking) you have seem the good and bad in us as a group and the really frustrating days we endure. Since you are still here, I also get the feeling you have also learned to quickly read between the lines and find the answers you seek. Ask away, there is NEVER a dumb question when learning...okay, I take that back, had a few of those thrown at me today (posted below for a good laugh)..but you get the idea, be informed and know the impact and how it would fit around your current schedule to study and then transitioning into your first MT job. Folks...THIS is a DUMB question!! Background info as my eyes are giving up for the day. The typed reports automatically are placed in the chart at the facility. Now I had IM duty today and theykept me hopping but this cracked me! ------I have a letter dictated to the patient and now the doc wants a cc to the chart, crackedmeup since ALL reports are placed into them medical chart
