line counting discrepencies

I have been working for a company for 2 years. I have recently being checking the line counting with Microsoft Word and have found that Word is always giving me a higher character count than the company. I also have Instant Text that comes with a line counter and this too is giving me a higher line count consistently, which is usually the same count as Word give or take. It seems to me like I am getting cheated but cannot quite seem to figure out what the company is doing. They claim that they are counting all characters, spaces, tabs, returns, etc. and dividing by 65 but I just do not ever get the same number. It seems every report is shy of 2-10 lines or so. Has anybody had a similar experience?
