In my personal experience, having a nursing background gave me a definite edge when I turned to MT, but I still had a LOT to learn. My first transcription job was working for a woman who felt I should have no problem with the career switch whatsoever. Well, I did have problems, even though I knew the terminology, was a decent speller, and had always done well in English Grammar and Composition. That first job opened my eyes to the reality that MT can be a wonderfully difficult, challenging, demanding, career choice. I took a short (5-month) MT course specifically designed for RNs, and that made all the difference in my ability to go forward. Ironically, after doing transcription for the past eight years, I'm currently enrolled in an RN refresher program with the intent of going back to work in a hospital. This is a purely economic decision on my part, as I love MT but am not a fast typist and can make more money as a nurse. I do know many LVNs and RNs who have the potential to become good transcriptionists, but there really are just as many who do not.
