for a mortgage soon. When I started recently working with my future mortgage rep, we pulled copies of my credit reports from the three houses, and the cancelled cards looked TERRIBLE. They don't just disappear on their own. It shows up as cancelled, but doesn't say BY WHO OR WHY. So, it can look like you got dumped by the credit card company. I then have had to write letters to the three houses, with documentation that I was the one to cancel, and asking them to remove the cards from my reports, etc. It has been a HUGE pain in the butt, and had I known this, I would have just left the ones I never use sitting on my credit report. According to my accountant/mortgage people, unused cards do NOT bring down your scores. They just sit there, and at least show that you have had credit cards and NOT used them!
