What exactly do you mean when you say C-phone?

I am currently dictating using a Dictophone w/micro cassettes. I would eventually like to obtain an at-home contract job. I understand using a PC and having dictation come across the modem line, but do not understand how or what a C-phone set-up is. Any help at all in explaining this would be appreciated. Does it requeire seperate phone line?
