Lanier LX 221--footpedal won't work

Hope one of you can help. I have a Lanier LX 221 Voicewriter that I bought off ebay (without the manual). Everything works, but I can't get the footpedal to work. It is probably just a setting--can someone please advise? Maybe I don't have the wires hooked up correctly?
