Experience doesn't always equal skill. For example, I recently worked for a hospital where none of the work was QA'd, people had horrible grammar and spelling and noboby cared. The doctors complained but supervisor would shrug it off and say "Oh, they're always upset about something". They would never give consideration to the doctors' complaints. It made me crazy. Some of those people had been there 20-25 years. Government job though, so nobody can get fired. Also standards and rules change from one job to the next. Your current job may want it one way, and the next job will want it the opposite way. One job follows the BOS like the Bible, and the next job will say "BOS? Never heard of it." If you stay in a job for a long time you can get used to doing something one way that may not be the "right" way. You become convinced that what you are doing is right because you have done it that way for many years, even though it is incorrect. Testing is a valid way of finding out what you are capable of. I'm very glad to test for someone. Not only is it good for them, but it keeps me sharp making sure I always have what it takes to pass.
